Remember 1997?
How cringe is it when someone brings up the literal 90s. I know, I know.
It’s hard to imagine for those of you who weren’t born before the Internet but in the old’n days we all just kind of ran wild in the streets and had to walk to school, uphill both ways. Noone could find us. We were like bandits.
Jokes aside, in 1997 there was more space for reflection.
I miss that actually.
Of course, there was more ignorance too.
“You don’t know what you don’t know.”
2023 is different.
Not only do you know more than your ancestors in terms of world happenings and having reasonably correct answers at your fingertips, but the campaign to quiet you down, to keep you a little more comfortable, a little more compliant; is very real. If you haven’t listened to this interview with former KGB defector Yuri Alexandrovich Bezmenov it’s worth your time.
This weekend I filmed a dance video with five kids for the launch of my book which is coming in 8 days (what the heck) … Speaking of that there will be more emails and I am humbly asking for your help. I’ve been low-key building this up for months now and it’s goooo time. I’m so excited!
“The story of YOLKED is that of listening to your intuition and following your gut, even when the world questions you. Embracing ‘your knowing’ when life and all its comforts aren’t asking for you to change.”
Back to the kids…
On Sunday before we began shooting, Sadie said “I heard Beau ask a classmate on the playground if she wanted to dance in his mom’s video” and she said “No way. I would never do that. Sadie don’t do it”, and Sadie looked at her and said “Why not - it sounds fun and exciting…”
That’s the voice. That’s what I call ‘the knowing’. This is what we love about children, right? Typically, they are less influenced by noise and are more likely to follow their intuition. The knowing isn’t filtered by the play it safe campaign. For better and for worse.
But may I remind you…
“Your knowing is not fragile.”
ANTI-FRAGILE. (Yes - I’ve been reading this book for 4 years and I’m still not done.)
Your body is not fragile. Your health is not fragile. Your mind is not fragile. We are conditioned, and it’s a slow drip if you’ve noticed … To observe > feel deeply > put up a wall > hold the imprint of frustration > forget > and move on…
Until the campaign fires up again and the process starts all over.
Speaking with clients, I notice many folks post 2020 feel further disconnected from themselves, like they’ve lost the knowing. Yet, it’s not lost … You can’t escape it.
The problem is the fear campaign is just so loud.
“Know your worth and act accordingly”.
That’s a wrap.
After we completed filming, I was so relieved it was over. Y’all, it’s a lot of stress to be the (very average) scriptwriter, lighting designer, director, sound tech, talent and the child wrangler … Highly, highly do not recommend. However what I saw while teaching these kids was curiosity, courage, and determination in motion. They were already exemplifying what my book YOLKED highlights best.
Your knowing is alive and well.
Your knowing is not fragile or lost or wrong. Everyday, all day, your knowing is tucked away whispering - HELL YEAH we can do this. Remaining fearful won’t keep you safe. That’s not how it works. This season of your life is colored with obstacles and opportunities that beg you to expand into what you know. And hey, if you go for it and discover that you were wrong; eat the OOPSADAISY sandwich, admit it, and forgive yourself.
“If knowing is half the battle, then acting on your intuition must be the rest”.
I just made that up.
And I stand by it.

I hope you’ll take advantage of it and try to dance with us or at the very least pawn it off on your nieces and nephews. More to come as launch day is March 29th. So so so excited. Thank you so much for your continued support.
ppps. I’m almost done reading Unreasonable Hospitality and holy smokes this is a good one. It’s about the power of giving people more than they expect. Also when I say reading, I mean listening because Audible. Also, I asked the many writers, editors, and publishers that are in my monthly strength group and they said listening counts as reading - so there.
