I came across this quote on the good ol gram from Shane Wuerthner aka Athletistry.
Dance is incredibly powerful because it is the physical representation of music. Music and its harmonies are the melodic representation of the universe. When you dance you’re expressing your connection to reality on the deepest level possible.
Wow.
This is what every dancer feels regardless of skill, technique, years of study, amateur or professional. ANYONE that enjoys dancing is open to the melding of spirit and body and that my friends is worth celebrating. Whenever I meet someone who doesn’t like dancing I imagine they just haven’t given themselves permission. They’ve forgotten.
I could be wrong perhaps there are a rare few who were born HATING DANCE.
I don’t know what to say about that other than it takes all kinds.
Science has been more active in researching the power and and benefit of sound for healing. That thrills me. I have always felt ‘healed’ by music and the life force that exists within a melody or a harmony. It’s a universe in and of itself.
Surely this will come as no surprise to those that know me…I fall asleep to 174 or 528 hz most every night. I often write my emails listening to 936 hz or some variation of music that deeply moves me. My friend Gina and I were having a discussion about the power of solfeggio frequencies just a few days ago. I told her that I zone out and do my best writing (and sleeping apparently) with these sounds in the background.
This week I didn’t feel like writing. I usually have a strong pull to the topic of the email prior to Monday so that I can comfortably send this thing out early Tuesday morning but, this week I was stuck.
I put on my tunes and settled in.
The difference this go around was that I felt called to move.
Kinda hard to write and roll around on the floor at the same time.
So I got up (or down) and did the thing.
Music influences our body both as a stimulant and a relaxant, without a doubt it’s a tool for healing. I can’t imagine my world without music. The science around musical entrainment and the power of these frequencies is still in its infancy however there is a pubmed article discussing a positive correlation with Solfeggio frequency music exposure in reversing cognitive and endocrine deficits evoked by 24 hour light exposure in adult zebrafish.
Yeah. I know that statement sounds like a bad Dr. Seuss title but as with most things … if you’re looking for an outcome, you may just find it. This becomes even more poignant for those of us that hold to a belief that we know ourselves, inside and out.
“I can’t dance.”
“I can’t sing.”
“I can’t draw.”
“I can’t write.”
“I can’t figure out how to do my own taxes.” (that one is personal. lol)
You are more adaptable than you believe. If zebrafish can reverse poor cognitive function by being exposed to solfeggio frequencies, I’m willing to bet you can set down your old story about what you CAN NOT DO.
By the way, to what degree constitutes “can do”… for instance, you can be a tone deaf singer (hi, it’s me) and still sing or you can be a sub par stick figure artist and still draw.
It doesn’t need to be masterful.
The value in attempting to improve should be the treasure. The crazy thing is that in doing so you may just find a sense of joy, of remembering, of play that reminds you this is all made up. The journey to self is not a linear well paved path. Quite the opposite.
This is the reality you're participating in and ultimately you have the final word. You keep going or you give up. You stay in flight or fight or you begin to regulate yourself. The gift here is that when you make space for curiosity you become your own perfect container. Soon enough you feel SAFE ENOUGH TO DANCE.
It’s not the dancing you don’t like, it’s the fear of someone else’s interpretation.
or your own.
The more willing you are to build internal capacity, the more willing you’ll be to get down and try the worm.
Or a grapevine.
Either way…
Make yourself safe enough to dance.
The music is waiting.

I once dated a guy (who you met at Maria & Joe's wedding) who refused to dance. I always said it was the BIGGEST red flag ever. He just wouldn't do it. But now reading this I feel compassion for him.
