I heard a young 20 something girl ask “at what point do you just stop giving an F” and I really had to think about it…
The concept of age comes up a lot in my conversations and in my circles. Sometimes it’s about beauty or hormonal shifts or newfound ways your body does or does not work. To answer that 20-year-old’s question…I’d say right around 40. Your ability to give an F just starts to dwindle… Maybe before that if you’re lucky.
The generations behind me are doing a great job of unpacking everything sooner. My thought is by the time you’re 40 you’ve unpacked a lot and you’re not willing to bring the entire carry-on suitcase along with you anymore. It occurred to me today, as it does frequently, that aging is just the coolest thing ever. Aging in the sense that you have long term relationships that evolve and circle back over time.
I cannot get over the way people have entered, left, and re-entered my life. It’s dumbfounding.
The way the 20 year-old girl was asking about the timeline for not giving an F is the same way I feel about the surprise of life with its intricate fabric of connection, energy exchange, and relationship.
A few days ago, I had a business call with a woman I haven’t seen in 16 years. We’re social media friendly, but hadn’t spoken in decades. She had an opportunity for me. I was shocked to hear from her and even more shocked about the potential opportunity we were discussing. If you had told me 16 years ago that she would still be in my field in any capacity I would’ve been confused as we were not close then and we’re not close now. Life has the raddest, most divine and mysterious way of creating a reality beyond your wildest imagination.
Thats my perspective.
I will always choose that perspective.
The alternative is life sucking.
Please hear me when I say a life that you are content with, is a life well lived. People are content with different adventures or lack there of. People are content with deep roots while others are content never truly landing.
I have always been and will continue to be in AWE of my life. My perspective is sheer awe most of the time. It serves me well. It also remains exciting in the sense that I have no idea where our relationship will take us. Yes, I’m talking about us -you and me!! We could be distant pen pals, “that one college semester” friend or immediate family - it’s all up for grabs and yet, there may come a time when I can help improve your life or vice versa.
HOW SPECTACULAR IS THAT?!
During this business call, I had the opportunity to connect two women that had a very specific mission. It came up in conversation and I got immediate full body chills. A selfless, culturally important, and potentially life altering mission. How does that happen?
I don’t know and I never will.
My perspective is that it’s divinely orchestrated and the “how and why” ain’t my business.
Your perspective is all you have control over. Frankly, your perspective is all you’ve got.
My humble suggestion is you should start getting really curious in this life because when you do, the most serendipitous occurrences present themselves.
And maybe it’s a relationship that leads to another relationship that brings about a level of healing far beyond your ancestors wildest dreams.
Or maybe you can swiftly answer the question “At what point do you stop giving an F”?
My perspective is it’s all fascinating and far more entangled than we’ve been led to believe.
We’re not aging as in getting older we’re aging as in growing opportunities.
Thats just my perspective.
