lol....why would I listen when I can make up my own crazy stories and stay distracted.
“When people show you who they are…believe them the first time.”
I know there is a motivational clip somewhere where Oprah shares this Maya Angelou quote from a rocking chair, in her beautifully landscaped back yard, and the inspirational music plays softly while you’re nodding your head, like “yeaaah Oprah..exaaactly.”
Then you close your phone, set it down on the counter, and get back to your old bulls*t…
NOOOO?
You donnnnnn’t?
Oh what do you do?
Maybe I’ll try that instead.
I wanna be fully transparent because a) I like it when I see others do this and b) it reminds me that we are all learning on the job.
If you missed my previous email, you can go back and read it. It was in part about this mystery rash that is covering my body, neck to ankles. We’ve done as much as we know to do, I’ll be having blood taken again, and in the last 72 hours, I’ve had a bit of a revelation.
One night after getting so angry over my non stop itching, I had a stare down aka break down in my bathroom, not being able to wear shorts because my legs are covered in bruises, red bumps, and dry nail tracks from where I’ve tried to draw blood in my manic scratching episodes…
I gave up a little.
I softened.
Just then I received a DM from one of my favorite humans Samantha Faulhaber and she said “Have you tried listening to your body?”
I know Samantha and I know what she meant.
My inner voice was like “oh no ma’m, you for sure have not done what she’s asking…”
I plopped down on my bed, hand on my heart and hand on my belly and I asked myself sincerely… “What are you trying to tell me? I love you my gorgeous, strong body. I do my best to take care of you but what am I missing?”
Immediately, I heard THANK YOU.
The other chatter was messy and scattered but I landed on the thank you. I needed to hear this and it gave me pause. I have been so incredibly blessed health wise and this is a reminder that my body is always on my side. When we are confused as to why something is happening physically, I always remind clients (and myself when I can slow down and listen) that our bodies are magnificent, creative, ancient, healing LIFE FORCE mechanisms.
All the trillions of cells that had to do their job at conception…
All the synapses that had to fire and rewire again and again in your life thus far.
All the involuntary systems that have a myriad of responsibilities, not to mention reorganizing themselves during injury, pregnancy, stress, illness, and/or skin rashes.
My body has shown me who she is time and time again, yet over the last month I haven’t believed her.
It’s important to give credit now to the women in my monthly strength training group. We’ve been going strong for over a year and the support I feel from these women, some of whom I’ve never met in the flesh, baffles me. When you have a community that is based in accountability and support, you don’t walk alone. I’ve received emails, long post-class chats, resources and recommendations from them. You can and should have a network of folks who see themselves in you. That is key. We have so much to offer one another apart from “the fitness”.
