Am I the problem?
Let’s rewind the tape, shall we.
Thoughts turn into things.
Whenever I speak with new clients about what they hope to accomplish in personal training or what their fitness or mobility goals look like in the future, I ask them to feel what it feels like for this accomplishment or this goal to be lived and realized in the present moment. It works for about 60 seconds before they get distracted or offer up a reason to justify or defend why it hasn't worked so far. The passion with which they defend the problem never fails to remind me that our thoughts and feelings are the meat and potatoes of our physical reality.
Before you begin to defend the problem consider that you can’t fight for desperation, unworthiness, or disappointment and expect the solution to just appear out of thin air. There must be a conscious shift from one end of the spectrum to the opposite side. Are you aligned with the problem or are you aligned with the solution? If you’re unsure of what you’re thinking and feeling your evidence is found in your surroundings (insert gut punch). It manifests itself in relationships, interactions, physical stress, tension…the list goes on.
Are you living and breathing the problem?
Or
Are you living and breathing the solution?
Maybe you’ve heard the statement that every subject is two subjects. It’s always 2 sides of the same coin. This has become increasingly clear as I’ve gotten older and taken personal inventory of my past.
When I was struggling in my marriage, I was treading water financially, spiritually, and personally. I held it together to keep the facade up and running but at the end of the day I’d lock up my business, sit down in my car, and just sob. It wasn’t until I reached rock bottom where I finally said “this is not how my story continues”. Admitting that was terrifying because I was facing a mountain of unknowns however I was certain the other side of the coin was where I deserved to be.
My only choice was to begin identifying with the solutions.
So, how do you close the gap of living the problem to living the solution?
Get Still.
The seed has already been planted.
In you.
Ready to grow and drop roots and rise up so that you may receive the blessings that are rightly yours. Our beliefs are just thoughts. Negative beliefs will repetitiously keep you from the full blown solution unless you can quiet the mind to FEEL AND EXPERIENCE the downloads needed to move the needle toward the solution. And the next solution. And the next…and so on…
The day after Easter, many years ago, I committed to a mediation practice that catapulted me from one end of the spectrum to the other. Meditating for 20 minutes once a day (sometimes 2x a day) gave me solace and quieted my nagging fear based beliefs just long enough for me to hear my divine downloads. With consistency and a desire for God’s intervention, I opened my heart and answers came in the form or people, opportunities, community support, and peace. Meditation made me a believer.
(I even documented some of it…that’s what we did in 2015.)
Each of us is source energy. When we move energy we move the needle. Some of us need stillness. Some of us need sweat. Some of us need both.
Nobody asked but I’m currently incredibly happy. I am healthier than ever, excited about my career, enjoying my friends and my opportunities, experiencing life through my son’s eyes, and creating memories with my partner. In early 2020 I had to pivot like everyone else and I saw a flickering opportunity to play with my future. I chose to double down on the ‘solution’ oriented side of the spectrum. It’s working.
I know it’s working by how it feels.
Just this past weekend I had brunch with my girl Ace and after a 2.5 hour nonstop therapy session (ummm neither of us are therapists but its crazy what 2 committed, passionate seekers can reveal to one another) she framed me in a light that was new to me. She said “you absolutely know where you’re going. You always have. Sometimes you’re taking the scenic route but baby, your intuition leads you. From here forward, you must always listen.”
We have infinite intelligence planted within us.
Sitting with Ace going deep (over some orgasmic buttermilk brunch biscuits) and hashing out patterns in both our lives was so satisfying. Our conversation reaffirmed that the only way out is through. When I reflect on how she embodies her solutions, I’m further convinced we experience the problem SO THAT we have an opportunity to incorporate the solution.
You are not the problem but even if you think you are, there’s a solution with your name on it…
